Pool covers: choosing one for the way you use your pool

Reducing evaporation, keeping out debris and making seasonal closure easier are different aims. Before choosing a cover, decide which matters most and how you will use it day to day.

Start with the function you need

Thermal covers used in summer can help retain heat and reduce evaporation. Winter covers are intended to protect the pool during periods of lower use. Other options offer specific features. They should not be treated as equivalent products simply because they all cover the water surface.

Explain whether you will open and close the pool every day, leave it unused for months or use a cover alongside pool heating. This makes alternatives easier to compare sensibly. No single cover should be recommended for every pool without considering its shape and surroundings.

Ease of handling affects the outcome

A cover that is difficult to put on may end up being used less than expected. Before choosing, ask how it is removed, how much space it needs and who will do it. Check where it will be stored or rolled up, and whether it will obstruct access, furniture or everyday use of the terrace.

In a home with several occupants, the explanation of operation should not be limited to the person receiving the installation. Ask for a demonstration of fully closing and opening it. The effort and time involved need assessing for your actual pool, rather than only watching a video of a model installed elsewhere.

Also ask about cleaning and storage when the cover is not in use. These matters should be resolved before choosing, especially if the garden has little spare space.

Check steps, shapes and junctions

Compatibility depends on the shape of the pool shell, protruding features and available space. Steps, a bench or a special edge may need a particular solution. Provide dimensions and photographs so the whole arrangement can be assessed before buying a product based on its nominal dimensions.

If the pool is being planned, consider the cover during design. If it already exists, ask for the necessary adaptations and their scope to be identified. Do not assume an automatic option fits every pool without additional work, or that every system requires the same preparation.

Do not assume every cover provides a safety function

A thermal blanket should not be confused with a solution specifically designed and documented for other protective functions. If protection is one of your aims, request model-specific information and its installation and usage conditions. Do not infer its capabilities solely from thickness, material or the presence of a motor.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and maintain appropriate supervision and preventive measures around the pool. The cover requires correct handling; leaving it partly fitted or using it in an unintended way is not equivalent to the operation for which it was designed.

Include the cover in pool care

Covering the water does not remove the need for maintenance. Treatment and equipment still need attention according to the conditions of use. If you change how the pool is covered, tell the person responsible for maintenance so they can assess any appropriate adjustments.

When discussing improvements with Red Málaga, explain what you want to resolve and whether there is heating or automated treatment. This helps assess the relationship with the installations and define which work should be considered, without assuming a cover alone addresses every pool need.
